Surgical Robots Improve Surgical Outcomes
First there was the conventional open surgery, after allowing lamparoscopia emerged that interventions were not so invasive. And now, the main novelty in the world of surgery are surgical robots.
“It’s the cases where conventional surgery involves a major trauma, with more pain and post-surgical recovery longer, in which robotic surgery may contribute more to the patient, as it combines the effectiveness of open surgery with the advantages of minimally invasive surgery, which is the great advantage of robotic surgery, “said Dr. Pablo Gonzalez Jerez, medical director of HM Group.
More specifically, the advantages of this surgical system are of two types: those inherent in minimally invasive surgery robot themselves. Among the first highlights the lower postoperative pain and risk of infection, decreased complications, length of hospital stay, blood loss and the amount of scarring, and faster recovery. As to the second type of benefits, means less learning curve, better vision, and greater accuracy, reproducibility of surgical procedures and comfort for the surgeon.
Any intervention that can be performed by laparoscopy or thoracoscopy is likely to be performed by a surgical robot. But there are certain specialized procedures, which by their technical complexity are particularly suitable for implementation with the robot. We talk, for example, urology, gynecology or oncology, among others.
Madrid Hospital Group has recently acquired the Da Vinci robot, a pioneer in this type of intervention, and will be installed this fall 2010 at the Hospital Universitario Madrid Sanchinarro.
