Cystitis: Diagnosis and treatment

Diagnosis
See a doctor if symptoms do not disappear in two or three days or if fever, chills or back pain, or notice blood in the urine, discharge from penis or vagina.
Pregnant women and people with diabetes, hypertension (increased blood pressure) or kidney problems should consult their doctor immediately to prevent the infection becomes complicated.
Cystitis is common in people with multiple sclerosis or other diseases affecting endings that control the bladder muscle.
The doctor will perform a urine test to determine the cause of the infection, and in some cases may prescribe antibiotics before obtaining test results.
Treatment
Having identified the cause of IC, and if no abnormalities are found, it can be treated with antibiotics to eliminate infection. Also to be considered the following recommendations:
* Drink fluids are recommended eight to nine glasses of water a day
* Women often suffer from cystitis, should drink a glass of water before intercourse and urinate at the end, this helps to evacuate any bacteria lodged in the urethra
* Avoid sitting with a wet bathing suit for long
* Women should avoid vaginal deodorants, bubble baths and other irritants, and if they use diaphragms to prevent pregnancy, it may be advisable to change to another contraceptive method
* After a bowel movement, the women’s genitals should be cleaned from front to back entrance to avoid contaminating the urethra with faecal remains.
