Exercise Attenuates the Predisposition to Obesity
It has been shown that increased physical activity can reduce up to 40% genetic predisposition to develop obesity. This follows a study by the Medical Research Council Epidemiology Unit in Cambridge (UK) and collected in the latest issue of PLoS Medicine ‘
This study has shown that there are 12 genetic variants that influence overweight in our body. After investigation it was deduced that each genetic variant was associated with an increase of 445 g in weight, and that this effect was lower in people who regularly engaged in some type of exercise.
Researchers say that “lead a physically active life was associated with a 40% reduction in the genetic predisposition to obesity”, since the increase is only 379 grams for each variant.
“We are seeing that genetics plays a role in obesity, but also that this predisposition may be modified with a healthy lifestyle,” said Jonathan Ruiz, member of the Preventive Nutrition Unit at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm (Sweden). Thus, it is shown that it is impossible to fight against what is written in the genes.
