See a doctor if symptoms do not disappear in two or three days or if fever, chills or back pain, or notice blood in the urine, discharge from penis or vagina.

Pregnant women and people with diabetes, hypertension (increased blood pressure) or kidney problems should consult their doctor immediately to prevent the infection becomes complicated.

Cystitis is common in people with multiple sclerosis or other diseases affecting endings that control the bladder muscle.

The doctor will perform a urine test to determine the cause of the infection, and in some cases may prescribe antibiotics before obtaining test results.
